Chapter 7: Virginia

“Shit,” Zack said, closing up his phone.

“What?” I surprised myself by speaking—I had just come so hard I felt like I could have lost track of gravity.

“I have to play golf with Merrick Holtz in 20 minutes,” he said. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think that we would be here for so long.” He broke into an almost boyish, mischievous grin. “I guess I lost track of time.”

“Like, Merrick Holtz, the CEO of Delph Eye?” I asked.

Merrick Holtz was the fifth richest man in America.

“Yeah,” Zack said. “Total asshole. Bigot. But he owns part of FirePeak, so we can’t avoid him, unfortunately. Anyway, would you mind riding down with me? I can arrange to have someone pick you up along the way. I’m so sorry it turned out like this.”

Maybe it was the post-orgasmic pleasure haze. Maybe it was confidence gained from believing that he truly wanted me.

But most likely, it was the physical need my body felt for him that made me say, “I could just, I don’t know, come along.”

“You’d want to do that?” he asked. “Oh my God, that would be awesome. I would have an excuse not to talk to that guy. Would you really want to go golfing with me and Jax and Merrick Holtz?”

“It doesn’t sound like such a bad afternoon to me,” I said.

We got in the car and Zack instructed his driver to book it down to the course, some private country club that regular people would never be allowed to play. Zack just received a wave from the lot attendant as our shimmering car rolled into the lot.

Zack led me through the impossibly nice clubhouse and into a giant locker room with carpeting and huge wooden lockers. Jax was there, dressed and ready.

“What the heck is she doing here?” he asked. But he had a wry smile on his face.

“Lost track of time,” said Zack.

“Uh-huh. Sure you did,” said Jax. Then he looked at me. “He’s pretty talented, eh?”

I saw then that Jax wouldn’t respect me unless I showed him I wasn’t some stupid shy bimbo. “I’ll say,” I said. “I bet he’s got a lower handicap than you do.”

“Right you are,” said Zack. “In fact, mine is zero. Jax can’t seem to get over the hump.”

“You’ve been slacking,” said Jax. “That’s about to change soon.”

“Nice try,” said Zack. “Virginia, don’t believe anything he tells you.”

I liked the sense of competition between them. Now that I got to see them outside of a business setting, I could see they weren’t always a united front.

“You have to change too,” said Jax.

“I do? This isn’t nice enough?” I said. I was dressed for business.

“It’s not about being nice. It’s about being golf-nice. Here. Let me get you something.” Jax left the room and came back with a pink polo shirt and a white skirt, along with some socks and shoes. I looked at the tag.

“This is too small for me,” I said.

“Nonsense. Try it on,” said Jax.

It’s not like I couldn’t fit it over my head.
